Kaizer Chiefs retained their Maize Cup trophy after beating Free State Stars 6-5 on penalties at James Motlatsi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The encounter finished at 1-1 in regulation time after goals from Leonardo Castro and Eleazar Rodgers.

Chiefs took the game to Stars as early as the first whistle, Kabelo Mahlasela set up Khama Billiat who laid the ball for Castro, but Ali Sangare was equal to the task to make a save.

Stars saw their first chance going wide following a great turn by Siphelele Mthembu, who was close to beating Virgil Vries from close range in the 14th minute.

Amakhosi broke the deadlock in the 29th minute through Castro, who netted a brilliant goal from Billiat's cross on the left wing.

The Colombian forward came close to netting a brace when he beat Bangaly Keita with a clever chip, but his volley was saved by Sangare in the 40th minute.

The Glamour Boys were in front at the interval.

Castro pushed to double their lead and forced a save from Olivier Kwizera in the second half after breaking free from his marker, the substitute stood his ground and blocked the shot.

Stars’ showed resilience in search of an equaliser and Vries was saved by his crossbar from Harris Tchilimbou’s overhead kick in the box before the hour mark.

With eight minutes to go, Willard Katsande committed a foul in the box to concede a penalty and substitute Eleazar Rodgers converted on the spot to level the scores.

The two sides were deadlocked at the end of regulation time and the match was decided on penalties, with the Amakhosi lifting the trophy for the second year.
