Thabo Nthethe believes Chippa United are capable of winning trophies and hopes start with success in the Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup.

Chippa will compete in the one day tournament on Saturday, July 14 alongside Kaizer Chiefs, Free State Stars and ABC Mostepe League outfit Buya Msuthu.

Nthethe won six major titles with Sundowns in his four-year stay at the club, before leaving the reigning champions to sign with the Chilli Boys, who are yet to get a taste of glory in topflight football.

The furthest Chippa have gone in any official cup competition is the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup and MTN8. They will be hoping for success now that they have a player who knows all about winning silverware.

Nthethe says the Chippa players need to believe that they can win trophies.

“Yes, I believe so [Chippa can win trophies],” Nthethe told a local South African website.

“With the players that are there I believe we can do it.

"The players need to believe they can win trophies. As much as we can say Chippa is smaller team than other teams, what matters is what we do on the field.

"As long as we apply ourselves and work hard, then I think we can get something.”
