The Matlosana Municipality's Acting Executive Mayor, Lefa Nthaba welcomed the guests on Friday night, July 14 as he officially opened the 2017/18 Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup.

Football clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Township Rollers, Free State Stars and hosts Platinum Stars were in attendance as the tournament was officially opened.

Hosted in Klerksdorp City Hall, the event was meant to acknowledge the guests, clubs taking part in the 2017/18 Maize Cup and stakeholders such as former SAFA boss, Dr. Molefi Oliphant among others.

Speaking on behalf of the municipality Councillor Lefa Nthaba welcomed everyone who came to grace the occasion.

Former Bafana Bafana defender Aron Mokoena, striker Philemon Masinga, Zambian legend Kalusha Bwalya and Amakhosi legends Jacob Tshisevhe and Fabian McCarthy were also part of the gala event.

“On behalf of Matlosana Municipality, I greet you all, Honourable Premier of Bokone Bophirima, Supra Mahumapelo and all the dignitaries, football clubs and everyone of you, we welcome you in Matlosana, on behalf of the executive Mayor,” said Nthaba.

“The Maize Cup is part of the partner, North West, Free State and Mpumalanga as the three provinces were maize producers, three of the best, they are rich.

"These provinces are the agricultural hub as they are producing immensely in the country's growth and development

“This city is geared up to host this year's tournament. We have hosted Premier Soccer League games and we hope you enjoy this city.

"Sport is also about building social cohesion, and we also encourage the youth to participate in sports.

“This year's tournament has giants such as Kaizer Chiefs, Township Rollers from Botswana, Free State Stars and our own Platinum Stars.

“We welcome them and I want to say, may the best team win.”

In the opening semi-final on Saturday, Dikwena will meet Ea Lla Koto at 10:00 and Amakhosi renew their rivalries against Tse Tala in the second semi at 12:00.

The matches will be staged at Orkney Stadium in Orkney on Saturday, July 15.
