Kaizer Chiefs will be hoping to defend their Maize Cup trophy when they meet Free State Stars in the final at James Motlatsi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Under the stewardship of interim coach Patrick Mabedi, Amakhosi started the day with a 2-0 win over Buya Msuthu at the same venue.

Goals through Bernard Parker and Yusuf Bunting ensured the Soweto giants are through to the final, but they will face the same old foes in Ea Lla Koto.

On the other hand, the Glamour Boys will be boosted by the fact they have a new coach in Giovanni Solinas, who is yet to take charge of the technical area.

Mabedi could be tempted to unleash their marquee signing in Khama Billiat, who joined the club last month.

The two sides met last year in the final, but Amakhosi were crowned as champions for the first time and will be hoping to lift the trophy once again.

Looking at the reigning Nedbank Cup champions, Stars are still guided by their Belgian manager in Luc Eymael.

The former Polokwane City tactician will meet a side he dispatched in the Ke Yona in a semi-final that ended in ugly scenes at the Moses Mabhida Stadium back in April.

In the second semi-final, Stars faced Chippa United who made their debut at the pre-season and handed them a 3-1 defeat via penalty shoot-outs after a goalless draw in regulation time.

With the likes of Eleazar Rodgers forming part of the squad, the Bethlehem-based club will be hoping to beg their second win and lift the trophy for the first time.

On the other hand, the Free State side will pin their hopes on substitute goalkeeper Oliver Kwizera, who was fantastic between the posts and saved two of the Chilli Boys' penalties in the shootout.

The match will be staged at James Motlatsi Stadium at 16:00 (CAT).

Kaizer Chiefs retained their Maize Cup trophy after beating Free State Stars 6-5 on penalties at James Motlatsi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The encounter finished at 1-1 in regulation time after goals from Leonardo Castro and Eleazar Rodgers.

Chiefs took the game to Stars as early as the first whistle, Kabelo Mahlasela set up Khama Billiat who laid the ball for Castro, but Ali Sangare was equal to the task to make a save.

Stars saw their first chance going wide following a great turn by Siphelele Mthembu, who was close to beating Virgil Vries from close range in the 14th minute.

Amakhosi broke the deadlock in the 29th minute through Castro, who netted a brilliant goal from Billiat's cross on the left wing.

The Colombian forward came close to netting a brace when he beat Bangaly Keita with a clever chip, but his volley was saved by Sangare in the 40th minute.

The Glamour Boys were in front at the interval.

Castro pushed to double their lead and forced a save from Olivier Kwizera in the second half after breaking free from his marker, the substitute stood his ground and blocked the shot.

Stars’ showed resilience in search of an equaliser and Vries was saved by his crossbar from Harris Tchilimbou’s overhead kick in the box before the hour mark.

With eight minutes to go, Willard Katsande committed a foul in the box to concede a penalty and substitute Eleazar Rodgers converted on the spot to level the scores.

The two sides were deadlocked at the end of regulation time and the match was decided on penalties, with the Amakhosi lifting the trophy for the second year.
